Sponsored classes
Many children
do not have enough money to pay for state school ($2 per
month) or the required school uniform. Carita Feliz has
therefore received several donations in the form of
class sponsorship. Typically, this involves finding a
group of 30 children of different ages who are not in
school for financial reasons, buying them each a
uniform, black leather shoes, school bag, paper, pens,
pencils and then paying the monthly fee to attend a
state school. Since the start of 2004, 12 sponsored
classes have been established:
As a
result, 310
children now go to school thanks to the generosity of
these people.
Casa
de Estudios: Dorthe & Carl-Aage
In
January 2005, Carita Feliz opened a new facility called
Casa de Estudios: Dorthe & Carl-Aage. The building is a
place where students from the sponsored classes can do
their homework in a quiet and supportive environment.
There are two trained teachers there to help them:
Señora Martha Almanza helps the primary school children
and Felipe Picado helps those in secondary school.
Felipe specializes in Maths, Physics and Chemistry
but is capable in many other subjects too.
The Casa de Estudios is
open each day for Primary School students between 8-10am
and 1-3pm and for Secondary School students between
10-12pm and 3-5pm. The Casa de Estudios is named after
the donors, Dorthe Kolind and Carl-Aage Laustrup from
Denmark. It is an important donation for the children to
use because in this room, they have none of the
distractions that would normally prevent proper
studying.
