& Chiguines
Carita
Feliz has close ties to the local community and meets
regularly with neighbours, parents and other community
leaders. The center publishes its own monthly
newsletter, Chiguines, which means Teens. The newsletter
has a circulation of around 2,500 copies and is
distributed in local schools, businesses, Farmacia
Carita Feliz and directly to the children in the center.
It was
started in February 2004 when the computer education
first began in the center. Once the children had learnt
the basics of word processing, email and internet
searching, they needed a task – Chiguines was
established. A team of young journalists research and
write the articles and the newsletter also has
interviews, birthdays for the coming month, games,
coloring pages, jokes, health advice and news from the
center. The content and editing is done entirely by the
students, most of whom had never seen a computer prior
to the class.
Each
edition consists of
12
pages of text, drawings and photos. To date, 10 editions
have been published since the first edition in March
2004 and each edition has the following sections:
