A short guide to Nicaraguan body language

One of the unique traits of Nicaraguan culture is the extent to which they use their hands to communicate. During his year in Nicaragua, Andreas observed many of these hand signs in use. The signs are obviously not official sign language but are used to express visually what is difficult or socially uncomfortable to put into words. This includes signalling from across the street (e.g. come here), when in ear-shot of others (e.g. snob) or simply to emphasize something being said (e.g. fearful of someone). Some are offensive so watch out when you choose to use them. At least, you'll be prepared when someone is talking about you!
